58% of searches now end without a click
Most buyers get their answer straight from the AI, and never see a results page, let alone your site.
Here's the number for this issue: roughly 58% of searches now end without a click to any website.

Sit with that for a second. More than half the time, someone asks a question and walks away satisfied without ever visiting a site.
What "zero-click" actually means
A zero-click search is one where the answer shows up right there on the page or in the assistant. Think of:
- A Google AI Overview summarizing the best options.
- A ChatGPT response recommending three local providers.
- A Perplexity answer that quotes a review and lists a phone number.
- A map pack showing hours and ratings.
The buyer got what they needed. Your website didn't get a visit. It might not have been considered at all.
Why this changes the math
For years, businesses measured online success with traffic. More visitors meant more chances to convert.
In a zero-click world, traffic stops telling the full story. You can lose business without seeing any obvious drop, because the buyer made up their mind before they ever would have reached you.
The question shifts from "How many people visited my site?" to "When people asked about what I do, was I part of the answer?"
Who gets named
AI assistants tend to name businesses that are:
- Mentioned consistently across trusted sources.
- Well reviewed, with recent, specific reviews.
- Clearly described, category, location, services, in ways that leave no room for confusion.
- Backed by content that directly answers common questions.
Notice what's missing from that list: a beautiful homepage. Your site still matters, but mostly as one source among many that the AI reads.
What this looks like for a small business
Say a buyer asks: "Who's a reliable electrician in [your city] for an older home?"
If the AI names two competitors and not you, you never had a chance at that job. No click, no call, no record it even happened.
Multiply that by every buyer, every week. That's the invisible cost of not showing up in answers.
Three things to do this month
- Test your visibility. Ask three AI assistants the top five questions customers ask before hiring you. Write down who appears.
- Audit your reviews. Are they recent? Do they mention specific services and locations? Encourage customers to be specific.
- Answer one question well. Publish a clear, plain-language answer to your most common customer question, on your site and anywhere else you can.
The takeaway
The click used to be the goal. Now the mention is. If most buyers decide inside the answer, your job is to make sure you're in it.
And as we'll see in issue 11, that's not the end of marketing. It's a new front door.
