Welcome to Print to Prompt
How a business goes from being known on its own street to being the answer an AI assistant gives.
Ask a neighbor for a plumber and you'll get a name in about four seconds. Ask ChatGPT the same question and you'll get a name too. Maybe three. The difference is that your neighbor has actually met the plumber. The AI has only read about them.
That gap is what this newsletter is about.
Two kinds of being known
For most of the history of small business, visibility was local and physical. You were known because your truck was parked in a driveway down the street, because your ad sat in the community magazine on the kitchen counter, because someone's cousin used you and said you showed up on time.
That kind of reputation still matters. It's slow to build and hard to fake, which is exactly why it works.
But there's now a second way of being known. When a buyer opens ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot and asks, "Who's the best HVAC company near me?" the assistant doesn't flip through a phone book. It pieces together an answer from everything it has read: listings, reviews, articles, directories, your own website. Then it names the businesses it trusts most.
If you're not in that answer, you're not in the running. There's no page two.
Why we're keeping the threads separate
It would be easy to blur these two worlds together and call it all "marketing." We won't, because they run on different rules.
So Print to Prompt will alternate between two series:
- The Coffee Table covers local and community visibility. Print, word of mouth, neighborhood trust, and the unglamorous habits that make a business the one people recommend.
- The Citation covers AI and GEO (generative engine optimization). How answer engines decide who to name, what they read, and what you can actually do about it.
Once a quarter, we'll publish a Full Circle issue that ties the two together. That's rare on purpose. The connection is real, but it's more convincing when it's earned.
What you won't get here
No product pitch dressed up as an article. No "10 hacks to rank in ChatGPT overnight." No pretending print is dead or that AI is magic.
What you will get: plain-language explanations, real numbers when we have them, case studies that show the before and after, and conversations with people who do this work every day.
Who this is for
If you run, market, or advise a small or mid-sized business, whether that's a team of 5 or 500, and you've started to wonder whether the way customers find you is quietly changing, this is for you.
It is changing. Here's the good news. Businesses that already earned trust the old-fashioned way have a head start. They just need to make sure the machines can see it.
Next week
We open The Coffee Table with three myths about local print advertising, and what actually happens when a magazine lands on a kitchen counter.
See you then.
