Zero-click isn't the end of marketing. It's a new front door
Reframing the "no one visits websites anymore" anxiety as a different kind of opportunity.
If you've been following The Citation, you might be feeling a little uneasy. More than half of searches end without a click. AI assistants answer questions directly. Fewer people visit websites.
It's easy to read that as bad news. We'd argue it's a door opening, not closing.
The anxiety
The worry goes like this: "I spent years building my website. Now nobody visits it. What's the point?"
Fair question. But it assumes the website was ever the goal. It wasn't. The goal was always to be chosen. The website was just the place where that used to happen.
The new front door
Today, for a growing share of buyers, the first impression of your business doesn't happen on your homepage. It happens inside an answer.
- Someone asks ChatGPT for a family dentist near them, and your practice gets named with a one-line description.
- Someone asks Perplexity which accountants specialize in small businesses, and it quotes your FAQ.
- Someone asks Gemini for a reliable roofer, and it mentions your reviews.
That moment is your new front door. And unlike the old one, it comes with a built-in endorsement: an assistant the buyer trusts just recommended you.
Why this can favor smaller businesses
In the old search world, big brands with big budgets often owned the top results.
AI answers work differently. They care about relevance, clarity and trust signals: local reviews, community mentions, specific expertise. A well-run local business with clean data and a real reputation can get named right alongside, or ahead of, much larger competitors.
What showing up correctly looks like
Being in the answer is only half of it. You also want the answer to be right:
- Your name, location and category described accurately.
- Your actual specialties mentioned, not generic services.
- Recent, specific reviews reflected in the summary.
- A clear next step: a phone number, a booking link, a location.
When the AI describes you well, the buyer arrives already warm. Many will call directly without ever visiting your site.
What happens after the answer
Zero-click doesn't mean zero contact. The contact just looks different: a call, a text, a walk-in, a booking. That's why it pays to be ready on the channels where buyers now reach out. Fast responses by phone, SMS and email matter more when the decision is already made.

How to start walking through the door
- Ask AI assistants how they'd describe your business. Note anything wrong or missing.
- Fix inconsistent listings and add structured data.
- Publish clear answers to the questions buyers ask most.
- Keep earning reviews and local mentions. They feed the answer.
The takeaway
Zero-click didn't end marketing. It moved the front door from your website to the answer itself. The businesses that set up shop there first will be the ones buyers meet first.
